Alumni Update/Honor Roll

Former Jones County athlete drowns

Eddren Chester, who played football and competed in track and field at Jones County, drowned Friday in the Ocmulgee River at Frank Amerson Park.

The 2023 Jones County graduate was with friends, when Chester went under water around 6 p.m. on Friday. Witnesses state he went under twice, and the fire department and sheriff’s office responded.

Deputy coroner Lonnie Miley pronounced Chester dead at the scene approximately 90 minutes after emergency calls were made.

According to MaxPreps stats posted by the team, Chester played in 28 games from 2019-22.

He caught 40 passes for 394 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2021 when the Greyhounds went 10-3 and won the GHSA Region 4-5A title, catching 14 passes for 210 yards as a senior in 2023, also rushing 17 times for 53 yards.

He signed to play football at Reinhardt, and was listed as a freshman on the roster in 2023, but didn’t play in any games..

Chester was a good track athlete as well, in the sprints, and was on the Reinhardt men’s outdoor track & field roster

Season’s over, but not accolades for Houston County’s Burress at Tech

Future stars galore have been named to Baseball America’s All-America first-team in the 42 years of the publication.

Drew Burress is now the 10th freshman position player and 24th overall freshman to earn first-team honors. Eight of the nine freshman first-teamers progressed to eventual first-round MLB picks.

It’s the latest addition to a burgeoning resume: Perfect Game’s National Freshman of the Year and third-team overall All-American, an NCBWA First-Team All-American and freshman hitter of the year, and was selected to ABCA/Rawlings First-Team All-Southeast Region, ACC Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Conference,

He was also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy.

In addition to winning Georgia Tech’s 12th triple-crown recipient (team leader in average, homers, and RBI), he set the program record for assists by an outfielder with 10, and was among the top freshmen nationally in nearly 20 categories.

And Friday, he made the ACC baseball All-Academic team.

Henley digresses in second round

The good news for Russell Henley is that there is no cut at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

The bad news is he has quite a hole to dig out of for a respectable finish.

He was moseying along to an even front nine only to wobble on the back nine to finish with a 3-over 73 for a two-round 143.

That has him in a tie for 67th, only Eric Cole and Justin Rose below the group at the bottom of the 70-player leaderboard.

Tom Kim had a 5-under day to maintain the lead at a 13-under 127.

Henley bogeyed, thanks to two shots that missed the fairway, and then just missing a 12-foot par putt.

A par and birdie were misleading.

A par putt on 15 was too strong, an 8-footer on 16 was off by an inch, and  4-footer on 16 missed, and the tee shot on 17 hit the water.

As below average the putting has been – he’s 70th in the field in shots gained putting, and 65th around the green – it certainly could’ve been worse.

Henley isn’t in the field for next week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.
