Alumni Update
North Georgia needed things to happen to reach the NCAA Division II men’s golf match play championship in Winter Garden, Fla. on Friday.
And Stratford grad Will Chambless got those things going on No. 16 and finished them with a clutch putt on 18 – a 25-foot putt – to win his match by a stroke give the top-ranked Nighthawks the win 2-1-2 win over upstart eighth seed West Texas A&M.
The wild semifinal day is reported here.
The Peach Belt champs then took on No. 5 Colorado Christian a day later in the championship and lost 3-2. That match came down to the final hole, with Chambless falling by two strokes.
North Georgia finished fifth out of 20 teams earlier in the week at the NCAA Division II championship, 13 shots back of West Florida. Chambless – a graduate student who signed with Georgia State out of high school - struggled to a tie for 60th with a 6 over 219, setting up an improbable ending to the week.
