Henley climbs the PGA Championship leaderboard
Russell Henley couldn’t avoid a bogey-free round, but still tied his best score of the year in the third round of the PGA Championship in Louisville.
Henley drilled a 5-under 66 on Saturday to surge into contention for at least a top-10 finish.
He sits at 8 under and at 205, good for a tie for 19th, with Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and Hideki Matsuyama, among others.
That group is seven shots back of co-leaders Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa.
The Stratford and Georgia grad, ranked in the top 20 of both the FedExCup and Official World Golf rankings, shot consecutive 66s in his second tournament of the year, the Sony Open, leading to a tie for fourth.
It’s his second-lowest score in 37 rounds of the PGA Championship. He followed a first-round 74 with a second-round 65 in 2018 en route to tying for 50th.
Only twice in seven full Championships has Henley finished in the top 37, tying for 12th in 2015 and for 22nd in 2016. He missed the cut last year.
Henley and Spieth tee off at 12:55 p.m. on Sunday.

Rains washes out GIAA baseball
Optimism was rained out early Saturday morning, and the already soggy Luther Williams Field wasn’t in any shape for a day of GIAA state championship baseball.
The group called it a day before lunchtime, wiping out the latest patchwork schedule.
Everything moved to Monday, with two Game 3s at Tattnall and two Games 2s – and 3s if needed – at Luther Williams.
The new schedule: Class A Game 3 at 10 a.m. and AA (Gatewood vs. Edmund Burke) at 2 p.m. at Tattnall; Class AAA Game 2 at 10 a.m., followed by Game 3; Class 4A Game 2 (FPD vs. Brookstone) at 4 p.m., Game 3 to follow, at Luther Williams.
Rain did more damage to all of the GHSA finals, spread out over a number sites throughout the state. Only Class 6A at Coolray Field finished on Saturday.
