Obituary: football lifer Frank Orgel, ex-Warner Robins coach, battled Lou Gehrig’s Disease
Warner Robins’ football history may not be what it is if not for a man who was head coach of the Demons for only three seasons.
Frank Orgel took over for Joe Sumrall in 1970 and kept alive the run that Sumrall started, then gave way to one Robert Davis, who took the program up a notch.
Orgel died Friday at age of 85, his death not becoming public knowledge until Wednsday.
Sumrall passed away in 2004, Davis in 2020.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday at the Auburn University Club Pavilion.
Orgel came to Warner Robins as an assistant under Joe Sumrall in 1966. The two worked together in Thomasville. Orgel took over as head coach three years later when Sumrall moved up to principal.
The Demons went 27-4-2 under Orgel, with two region titles and two trips to the playoffs. Many fewer teams made the postseason in the 1970s and 80s.
Orgel then began his college coaching career, at North Alabama with Mickey Andrews for a season in 1973, having been succeeded at Warner Robins by Robert Davis. Orgel then became Pat Dye’s defensive coordinator at East Carolina in 1974 and Danny Ford’s defensive line coach at Clemson in 1975.
A year later, he had the same title with the same coach, but at Auburn, where he developed close relationship with Bo Jackson and stayed until 1985. Orgel coached at South Carolina with Joe Morrison for three seasons, then was lured back to alma mater Georgia – he played for Wally Butts after starting as a walk-on, en route to a short stint in the NFL - to coach linebackers under Ray Goff.
His coaching career ended when Goff’s Georgia career ended in 1995. After several years as the athletics director for Albany public schools, the 1956 graduate of Albany High fully retired in 2001.
Orgel, who met wife Sarah at Warner Robins, was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in the early 2000s and had been confined to a wheelchair since then. He entered hospice care in January.
