Macon County hires new head coach, from Lanier County
A somewhat familiar name is taking over at Macon County.
Kurt Williams got his coaching and teaching career started at Macon County, serving as defensive coordinator there and at Brunswick.
The school announced the hire Friday afternoon.
"I’m excited to return to Macon County where my teaching and coaching career began,” he said in the school’s statement. “Macon County has always held a special place in me and my family’s heart.”
Dexter Copeland abruptly resigned in early January, after the Bulldogs went 10-3, their fourth 10-win season under Copeland, who arrived in 2015.
Williams is a native of Berrien, and got his B Bachelor’s from Valdosta State in 2012. He then spent two seasons at Macon County, first with the defensive line and special teams and then as defensive coordinator, under Larry Harold.
Harold left after his third season for Brunswick High, and Williams joined him, staying there after Harold’s departure after two seasons for Central.
Williams took over at Lanier in 2018, following Carl Parker, who had three straight 1-9 seasons. The Bulldogs went 0-10 in Williams first year, followed by 3-7, 3-6, 3-7, and then 6-6 in 2022, good for Lanier County’s first playoff trip since 2005.
The Bulldogs beat Miller County in the first round of the A/II playoffs, then lost to Wilcox County 44-34. Lanier County went 7-3 in 2023, falling 41-35 to ECI in the first round.
He went 22-39 in six seasons, leaving as the program’s second-winningest coach (Daniel McFather went 33-48 in eight seasons, from 2001-08. Williams is one of three Lanier County head coaches to last more than three seasons. The program began in 1998, and has only six non-losing seasons, two under Williams.
Solid second round, and Henley makes cut
It wasn’t looking too good for Russell Henley after a round at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beaches, the Stratford grad sitting in a tie for 98th.
Friday was better, although Henley still had to battle a bogey bugaboo en route to a 2-under 69 and jump all the way to a tie for 53rd.
His jump of 43 spots was nice, but actually pedestrian on a day when players moved up 72, 69, 60, 54, and 53 slots, to name a few.
A nice start with two birdies was quickly interrupted with a bogey. Birdies on 8/17 and 9/18 were followed two holes later by two more bogeys, Henley getting a birdie on 17/8.
