Chance Jones lands at Southland

Former Tattnall and Stratford head coach Chance Jones has had some quiet time, sort of, but that’s over now.

Jones is the new head football coach at Southland in Americus.

The school made the announcement on social media on Thursday.

Jones replaces Rod Murray, who went 51-60 in 10 seasons, with the second-most wins in program history. The Raiders have had four straight non-winning seasons.

Murray posted in January that he wouldn’t be returning to Southland next year, and was named as athletics director at Deerfield-Windsor in February.

Jones lives in Perry, about an hour from Americus. Speaking of quiet time ending, he and wife Caroline Amos Jones became parents of Dempsey Ruth last March. He brings a career record of 44-25/63.8 percent to Southland.

Southland has other Central Georgia connections on its coaching tree.

Longtime Stratford coach David Bailey was the head coach from 1981-83 and went 30-7 with two trips to the GISA AAA finals with three region titles. Bruce Lane, who has coached at Monroe Academy, GMC, John Milledge, and Westfield went 7-14 in 2000-01.

Rodney Collins, the two-time Stratford head coach who passed away in January, went 9-11-1 in 1979-80. Eventually, Collins and Bailey along with Southland alum Walt Mays all ended up at Stratford.
