Hutchinson handles GMC JC in semifinal
Things were going fairly well for GMC JC in the National Junior College Athletic Association semifinal at Davenport Field.
Then third-ranked Hutchinson Community College took over, outscoring second-ranked GMC 28-14 in the second quarter to gain control and roll in the second half for a 63-21 win Sunday over the Bulldogs.
GMC’s season ended at 10-2.
Keenan Phillips scored on a 16-yard run late in the first quarter, then followed up an HCC score with a 28-yard pass to Chip Coop for a 14-7 lead three minutes into the second quarter.
The Blue Dragons tied it two minutes later on a 43-yard run, then returned a punt for a touchdown five minutes after that, and then scored on a 58-yard run three minutes later for a 28-14 lead.
GMC made it a one-score halftime game with a 43-yard pass from Phillips to Cooper with 40 seconds left.
It stayed that way until Hutchinson began its barrage six minutes into the third quarter, scoring twice in that quarter and three times in the fourth while shutting out GMC in the second half.
Flag football postseason reaches next round
Three Central Georgia teams are still alive in the GHSA flag football playoffs.
Dodge County hosts Westside in a battle of Division I powers at 6 p.m. on Monday, while Washington County visits Columbus at 6 p.m.
Peach County hosts Pope in a Division III matchup at 6 p.m.
Winners advance to action on Thursday.
