GHSA
Class A/Division II
Saturday
4/4 Hawkinsville, 7-3, at 3/1 Metter, 8-1/8T, 4:30 p.m.
Metter hasn’t lost since a surprising 37-14 win by Swainsboro back on Aug. 30, with only one win all year by single digits and one more by 11. The Tigers have been ranked pretty much all year, and are in their sixth straight postseason, having won four first-round games in that stretch. Hawkinsville is more used to close games, and is on a nice four-of-five run itself. The Red Devils are in the postseason for the second straight year afer an odd drought since the 2014 state title. They’re assured of their first winning season since then, too,

1/3 Miller County, 7-3, at 5/2 Wilkinson County, 6-4, 3 p.m.
First-year head coach Jamoski Ward has the Warriors entering the playoffs on a nice run, winning four of their last five games, the loss by only eight to region champ Johnson County. He has the best record of a first-year head coach in program history, and hopes for better results than lsat yaer’s first-round home game, a 42-0 loss to Lincoln County. Miller County is intheplayoffs for the seventh time in nine years, and the Pirates have one two first-round games in that stretch. Tom Causey is in his debut season as well.
5/3 Hancock Central, 5-5, at 1/2 Mitchell County, 8-2, 3 p.m.
Hancock Central alum Brandon Nolley has his alma mater in the playoffs for the third straight year, which hasn’t happened in Sparta in program history. Former South Carolina standout Dondrial Pinkins is in his second stint at Mitchell County, where he is 40-33.
7/4 Greenville, 3-6, at 6/1 Macon County, 6-4, 3 p.m.
These two know each other a bit, having played the last four years as region rivals, Macon County winning all four, and pretty convincingly. First-year head coach Kurt Williams steered the Bulldogs to a quality 5-1 finish and the program’s sixth region title since 2014. Greenville is in theplayoffs for the first time since 2014, benefitting from a five-team region.
6/3 Taylor County at 7/2 Bowdon, 8-2/2, 6 p.m.
The Vikings have a tough opening task against Warner Robins grad and former assistant Richard Fendley Jr., who have won two straight state titles yet enter as the No. 2 team in its region. The Vikings are on a drought of five straight first-round losses, but have their highest win total since 2017, progressing each year since Brandon Byram took over.
