CGA’s HS roundup: Perry gets the ‘upset’, HoCo blanked, Baldwin wins on the road; big nights for Upson-Lee, West Laurens, Dublin, Northeast, Stratford, Brentwood; Jasper County gets 3-OT W

Class 5A

No.6 Coffee 14, No. 7 Houston County 0
          The scoreless tie was broken in the final two minutes of the third quarter on a short TD run by Coffee, and added to with a 28-yard run early in the fourth, after three quarters of penalties and sloppy play on both sides. Houston County was shut out for the first time since a year ago, a 27-0 loss to Thomas County Central on Oct. 21.

No. 2 Lee County 67, Veterans 10
          The Warhawks scored 10 points for the third game out of the last four, while giving up at least 55 points for the third straight game.

No. 3 Thomas County Central 62, Northside 0
          The defending 6A champs went up 48-0 by halftime en route to Northside giving up 60 points for the second straight week and suffering its sixth straight loss.

Class 4A

No. 11 Perry 31, No. 5 Ware County 21
          A huge computer underdog, Perry led from the start. Cullen McDaniel hit Kory Pettigrew for a score a few minutes into the game, and they added a TD pass to Kiel Sparks with three minutes left in the first quarter. Ware County cut into it with a TD pass midway through the second quarter. A 30-yard field goal added some cushion, which the Gators countered with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Another TD pass followed by a rushing score made it 31-14 with a few minutes left. Perry’s defense handled the Gator run game, holding Ware County to less than 200 yards in total offense. McDaniel and Reid Gunn teamed to go 24 of 39 for 300 yards passing, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Pettigrew caught 13 for 169 yards, Sparks four for 93. Ahmad Gordon ran 23 times for 96 yards.

No. 6 Warner Robins 34 New Hampstead 22
          The Phoenix had the Demons sweating a bit, trailing only 21-14 at halftime. Warner Robins got the ball back after a missed field goal and converted it to a 1-yard Da’veon Latimore touchdown and a 28-14 lead. New Hampstead got back within a score a minute into the fourth, Warner Robins countering with a 12-yard touchdown from Kenyan Johnson. New Hampstead failed on fourth down with about five minutes left, clinching it for the Demons.

Class AAA

Baldwin 19 Aquinas 7
          Sadur Salahuddin scored two touchdowns to lead Baldwin to a big region road 4-AAA win. The second one came with 4:24 to go in a one-score game, putting the Braves up by 12. Aquinas had gotten within six on a 3-play, 69-yard drive with 5:22 left in the game. The Braves then followed up with another fourth-down stop with a little over two minutes left. Baldwin – which led 6-0 at halftime - outrushed Aquinas 150-142 and had a 120-116 passing advantage.     

Howard 42, Cross Creek 6 (Click here for more)
          Cross Creek’s lead didn’t last long, and it took awhile for Howard – which hadn’t played in nearly a month - to build on a 7-6 halftime lead. Quarterback Deon Wellons had a nice night for Howard, completing 11 of 14 for 195 yards and three touchdowns. Terrance Brown broke free for 105 yards on eight carries. The defense held Cross Creek to 54 yards on the ground, the Razorbacks sabotaging themselves with losses of 33 yards on two bad snaps. Howard picked off two passes, one by Donald Williams in the red zone in the third quarter, and then a 100-yard return for a score in the final 80 seconds by Elijah Johnson. Williams’ big return set up Jacolbie Allen’s 6-yard run, Howard converting a fumble on the ensuing kickoff with a Terrance Brown run from the 26 for a 21-6 lead with five minutes left in the third.

Spalding 19, Mary Persons 17
          The Bulldogs were in position for the upset, pulling within 13-10 at halftime and taking the lead on a rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs thought they had a strip and score, but officials had whistled the play dead. Spalding then dropped a pass inside the 10. The Jaguars faced third and 11 from the Bulldogs’ 14 with five seconds left, and quarterback Dashun Gilbert scramble and found an open receiver in the end zone for the walk-off.

No. 2 Peach County 45, Bainbridge 14
          The Trojans needed a little while to score, but D.J. Hudson’s rushing touchdown got them going to a 24-7 halftime lead. He threw for two first-half touchdowns, and Peach County added a punt return for a touchdown.

Upson-Lee 50, Fayette County 7
          Fayette County had the Knights reeling a little bit early with a 7-0 lead after a quarter, scoring on its first play. Upson-Lee muddled around for awhile before answering with two second-quarter touchdowns, one by Malachi Character and one by Niko Wells. They started taking control with 22 third-quarter points.

West Laurens 56, Hephzibah 28
          The Raiders wasted little time in taking control, charging out to a 28-6 lead after a quarter and upping it to 42-14 at halftime, on two touchdowns by Shannon Adkins and Ty Cummings, one by Branden Brooks and a TD pass from Cason Pollock.

Class A/Division I

ACE 40, Southwest 14 (Click here for more)
          The Gryphons led 17-0 and 17-8 through one quarter, and then got going, Ace Hatcher starting it with a 2-yard run four minutes into the second quarter. They added a Henry Carter field goal from 26 yards for a 27-8 halftime lead. Hatcher went in from the 10 three minutes into the fourth quarter and from the 8 a few minutes later. ACE outgained Southwest 290-206, Hatcher rushing for 84 yards on 18 carries and completing 12 of 14 for 119 yards. Sawyer Raugh added the other rushing touchdown. Noah Syme and Jake McLendon each had interceptions.

No. 5 Dodge County 43, Jefferson County 6
          The news of the game is that Jefferson County scored its first points of the year, and did so against a top-10 team. They came in the fourth quarter, after the Indians were done scoring. Dodge County led 29-0 at halftime.

No. 2 Dublin 48, Bleckley County 17
          Two touchdowns per quarter was Dublin’s mode for much of the night, the Irish scoring twice in the first three quarters while keeping the Royals in check. It was 7-7 midway through the first when Azontae Walker went 46 yards to put Dublin up for good, Bleckley County following with a 39-yard Ford Childers Field goal to start the second quarter. Xavier Bostic went 9 yards for a touchdown, and Micah O’Neal threw 6 yards to Willie Batts for two Dublin scores in the final 4:35 of the second quarter. Trav Bostic from 6 and Batts form 18 took care of the third-quarter scores. Dublin outrushed Bleckley County 427-100, led by Batts’ 170 yards on 10 carries and Xavier Bostic’s 122 on 10 .

Jasper County 31, Social Circle 29, 3 OT (Click here for more)
          Social Circle took a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter, only for Jasper County to tie it by the midway point of the second quarter. A rushing score put Jasper County up 21-14, Social Circle tying it a few minutes later in the third quarter, which is where it stood the rest of the way in regulation. Both teams missed field goals in the first overtime, and the teams exchanged touchdowns – QB J.T. Thomas went in for the Purple Hurricanes - in the second overtime. A penalty nullified Jasper County’s successful conversion, but Thomas hit Bryan Ridley in the corner of the end zone to tie it. From then on, teams go for two points at that spot, and Jasper County’s Kamarion Owens scored, and then the defense stopped Social Circle. Jalen Stewart had 177 yards on 23 carries with two scores for Jasper County, which gave head coach Ashley Henderson his 100th win while clinching the program’s first winning season since 2003.

No. 11 Lamar County 24, Putnam County 7
          Putnam County woke up Lamar County a little by taking the lead late in the first quarter on a 22-yard field goal. Qua Hughley went in from a yard out with 5:59 left in the second to get the Trojans going, JahNizae Few scoring from 31 yards at the 3:08 mark, and Caleb Miller drilling a 21-yard field goal in the final minute for a 17-3 lead.

No. 7 Northeast 39, Central 0

Washington County 26, East Laurens 25

The Golden Hawks won in the final 13 seconds.

Class A/Division II

Hancock Central 28, Johnson County 6
          The Bulldogs pulled off a mild upset after marching out to a 15-6 lead after one and holding the Trojans scoreless the rest of the way.

Hawkinsville, 4-3/1-2, at Montgomery County, 2-4/0-2, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Marion County 27, Macon County 18

Taylor County 27, Chattahoochee County 14
          Brayden Ellison’s 3-yard run and accompanying conversion put the Vikings up 14-7 late in the second quarter. Chan Lumpkin returned a fumble 40 yards for another score three minutes into the third quarter to put Taylor County up by two scores, which Chattahoochee County answered midway through the third quarter. Chandler Lawhorn carried a blocked punt back 20 yards for the clinching score early in the fourth quarter.

GIAA

Class AAA

Tattnall 28, John Milledge 17 (Click here for more)
          The struggling Trojans from Milledgeville put quite the scare into the Trojans from Macon, leading 10-7 at halftime, the teams trading interceptions in the final minute. .Ben Brown took it in from the 6 for Tattnall’s first lead, with about three minutes left in the third. JMA got back on top on Asa Wall’s 4-yarder with around eight minutes left. That lasted only a couple minutes before Caden Faulk’s long TD pass to Ty Hunnicutt put Tattnall back up 21-17 with 6:29 left in the game. Faulk’s . Collins’ 30-yarder to Hunnicutt put Tattnall in control 28-17 with 3:52 left. Both teams gave it up on downs before Hunnicutt’s interception sealed it.

Stratford 56, Mount de Sales 13
          The Eagles started rolling early with a 21-0 lead after one. Zavion Deshazier’s 60-yard pass to Eli Fisher got the Cavs on the board early in the second quarter only for Stratford to answer about four minutes later for a 28-6 lead en route to a 42-13 halftime lead.

Bethlehem Christian 35, Piedmont 0
          The Knights got all of their points in the first half.

Westfield 17, Brookstone 10

Class AA

Brentwood 49, Augusta Prep 0
          The knockout punch came immediately as part of a 35-0 first quarter, the War Eagles converting a fumble recovery into a 28-yard TD pass from Baylor Cobb to Quez Collins less than two minutes into the game. Tristan Robinson’s long run set up Cobb’s 12-yard pass to Riley Helton for a 14-0 lead before the halfway point of the first quarter. Zech Denton added a 43-yard score less than 90 seconds later.

Edmund Burke 35, Gatewood 13
          The state champs got the best of the state runner-ups again.

Southwest Georgia 40, Trinity Christian 5
          The Crusaders were held to 72 yards passing and 65 yards rushing.

CFCA 14, Windsor 8 (Click here for more)
          The Lancers led 7-0 at halftime and upped it to 14-0 with about four minutes left in the game, Windsor countering a few minutes later. Judson Walls scored in the fourth quarter to seal it.
