Bad news on cut day for Central Georgians, good news for Peach County pair
Marquez Callaway signed with Denver to be with his head coach from New Orleans, Sean Payton.
The reunion didn’t last too long.
The former Warner Robins and Tennessee standout was among the cuts announced Tuesday by the Broncos on the final day of NFL roster moves to reach 53 players.
Callaway didn’t have a standout camp in a crowded receiver room in Denver.
Houston County grad Jake Fromm was let go by Washington reportedly before cut day as the No. 3 QB who signed in the middle of last season. He had a solid camp, going 23 of 41 for 261 yards with three touchdowns and interceptions in three exhibition games, and got plenty of good reviews in his competition with Jacoby Brissett.
Other Central Georgians cut just before or on cut day: Bleckley County LB Willie Taylor III, cut by Jacksonville; Veterans’ DL Cortez Broughton, cut by Buffalo; Mercer OL Jason Poe, cut by San Francisco.
Decisions on practice squad invites are to come, and all five are likely to get a few offers, if not a free agent signing opportunity.
But the news was good for Peach County’s Kearis Jackson.
The versatile former Georgia receiver and returner made the final cuts with Tennessee, one of five undrafted rookies to stick with the Titans.
Former FVSU standout Emanuel Wilson had a quality camp, and it paid off with him making the Green Bay roster. He’s the 14th former Wildcat to reach the NFL gridiron.
