Henley hits stride in final round of BMW, hot entering finale

Sundays have been crapshoots for Russell Henley this season, but he’s on something of a roll.

He turned in a 7-under 63 on Sunday at the BMW Championship in Illinois to record his third straight top-10 finish, tying for eighth.

He is 38 under total in his last three tournaments.

Henley has had issues on Sunday during good tournaments, and couldn’t escape the latest final round without a hiccup.

His bogey on 18 - he has a knack of occasionally starting or ending a round with a bogey – killed his chance to tie the course record, albeit temporarily, because BMW winner Victor Hovland later on Sunday set the course mark with a 61.

Henley had four birdies on the front and on the back nine. On 18, he missed his first fairway into the right rough, and then went into a greenside bunker, 92 feet from the green. His birdie attempt came up 14 feet short, his par try 19 inches off.

It was Henley’s fourth round of 65 or better in his last six tournaments. And good for a payout of $620,000.

Henley finished the tournament second in shots gained around the green and tee to green as well as driving accuracy, and ninth in shots gained. He finished in the top half of the 50-player field in 11 of 14 categories.

He enters the Tour Championship and season finale at East Lake in Atlanta this week – as well as increasing talk about a potential Ryder Cup spot - with momentum and confidence.

In the convoluted format for the Tour Championship, players ranked 11-14 start at 3 under par, and Henley is joined by Tommy Fleetwood, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, and Xander Schauffele in that group.

Instead of everybody starting the same, the format favors players based on their rankings.

“The FedExCup points leader after the first two Playoffs events will begin the TOUR Championship at 10-under par. The No. 2 player will start at 8-under. The No. 3 player starts at 7-under; the No. 4 player starts at 6-under; the No. 5 player starts at 5-under. Players 6-10 start at 4-under; players 11-15 start at 3-under; players 16-20 start at 2-under; players 21-25 start at 1-under; and players 26-30 start at even par.”
