Honors and accolades pour in for Houston County baseball
A state title was on the start of the honorifics for Houston County’s baseball team.
The Bears were listed by Perfect Game as the top team in Georgia and sixth nationally, No. 6 nationally by SBLive, No. 7 by Prep Baseball Report, and No. 11 nationally by Collegiate Baseball.
Drew Burress made the Perfect Game All-America first team in the outfield, the lone player from Georgia.
Collegiate Baseball News tapped Andrew Dunford and Burress as first-team All-Americans, Dunford in the multi-position category as a pitcher and first baseman.
Other first-team Georgians: Parkview shortstop Colin Hock, Parkview third baseman Cade Brown, North Atlanta shortstop Antonio Anderson, Cedartown shortstop Dylan Cupp, North Atlanta outfielder Isaiah Drake, and Parkview pitcher/first baseman Landon Stripling.
Players from Parkview, North Atlanta, and Walton made the second team.
Burress also made the MaxPreps All-America first team, one of two from Georgia. And he was picked as the Class 6A player of the year and state all-classification player by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Bears set a program record with a 36-6 record en route to their fourth straight region title and the Class 6A championship.
Cox returns to Class AAA
Less than a week after his first Major League start was cut short by too many runs, Austin Cox was sent back to AAA Omaha on Tuesday by Kansas City, while a right-handed pitcher was recalled.
Cox (FPD/Mercer), likely to return a time or two the rest of the season, is 0-1 with a 3.05 ERA in eight games, with 20.2 innings of work.
He went 4.2 innings on Monday against Minnesota in his second start, with four strikeouts, two walks, seven hits, and three runs. In two starts, he gave up 13 hits and seven runs in 8.1 innings.
