Alumni Update
Road to MLB for Veterans grad Holt has detours
Gabe Holt was making the most of a disappointing change in plans, only to get hit with another disappointing change in plans.
The Veterans grad is with the Gateway Grizzlies, located just outside of St. Louis, of the independent Frontier League,
Holt got off to a money start, going 9 of 11 with three RBI and two steals to begin the season, joining the team in January.
Through Sunday, he has played in 48 of the team’s 63 games, and is batting a team-leading .435. He is eighth in at-bats but second in hits and third in steals.
Holt, who earned a spot in the league’s all-star game, hasn’t played since the first game of a doubleheader on July 15 and soon after underwent season-ending surgery on a fractured finger, ending a quality year.
He suffered a thumb injury on the same hand during the 2019 Super Regional.
Holt was drafted out of Texas Tech in the seventh round by Milwaukee in 2019. He hit .249 in 687 at-bats with three homers and 62 RBI, plus 27 steals in the minors.
He played in 11 games rookie-league in rookie-league action in 2019, a season slowed by injury, then in 97 games in 2021 with Class A Carolina and Class AA Biloxi, hitting .283 with 16 doubles and 17 steals. Entering the 2020 season that was eliminated by COVID-19, Holt was ranked as Milwaukee’s No. 29 prospect, and 44th in the middle of the 2021 season.
Last year, he hit .205 with a .257 on-base percentage in 81 games with Biloxi.
