Henley has sharp final round at U.S. Open
The first three rounds of the U.S. Open were unpredictable for Russell Henley, yet there he stood in the top 20 entering the final round.
He got better.
An early bogey, on No. 2, didn’t sidetrack Henley a bit and he shot a 2-under 68 – for the second straight round - to finish tied for 14th in the 123rd U.S. Open, the first at the secretive Los Angeles Country Club.
Georgia Southern’s Ben Carr had a second straight rugged round, shooting 6 over to finish with a 293, 13 over and good for 62nd out of 65 players.
Henley takes home $356,431, along with Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay.
Henley followed that bogey with pars and birdies until a bogey on nine. That didn’t bother him either, and he had a birdie on 10, and then reeled off seven straight pars.
On 18, he was in the rough-like native area, 28 feet from a birdie. His seven-footer for par slid past to the right for his third bogey of the day.
Henley put in some quality work on 14 on a par 5. He went to the left rough off the tee, then to a dirt outline rough on the right side. He hit the middle of the fairway, then got within 16 feet from 129 yards, and drained it for par, keeping him in the top dozen and 3-under for the tournament.
Sunday was a good day on the green for Henley, who hit a 15-footer for birdie on 10, then was no closer than 4-1/2 feet on his next seven birdie putts,
On his early bogey, a 31-foot par putt came within three feet, and on a bogey seven holes later, his eight-footer scooted past for an 18-inch bogey putt.
Henley has competed 10 U.S. Opens, missing three cuts, his finishes ranging from tied for 16th in his first in 2010, to tied for 60th in 2014. His only U.S Open under par was in 2017, 1-under for a tie for 27th.
He had only four sub-70 rounds in the tournament before Saturday and Sunday. Even when he finished tied for 13th in 2021, he had only one, following a 67 with a 70, 71, and 76 to finish even.
Henley is in the field for this week’s Travelers Championship in Connecticut, for the sixth time. He missed one cut, and had finish tied for 19th or better in four of the five outings.

Central Georgia umps worked Women’s College World Series
A pair of umpires normally roaming around fields in Houston County and Central Georgia were again in Oklahoma City for the NCAA Women’s College World Series.
Don Brown and Robbie Guest of the Houston County Umpires Association were among those calling the WCWS. Guest was the plate ump in Oklahoma’s 3-1 win over Florida State.
The two have worked scores of GHSA title games, and serve as clinicians at the GHSA Umpire Development Camps each summer.
GMC’s Howell to head GACA
One of Central Georgia’s more versatile coaches is now head of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.
Tommy Howell, currently an assistant football coach at GMC Prep in Milledgeville, took over earlier this month during the group’s Hall of Fame weekend in Dalton.
He replaces East Laurens cheer coach Tina Hester, who now moves to the executive board as Past President.
Howell has been a member of the GACA since 1996, and on the board since 2006. He has served on committees or as a coordinator for tennis, soccer, football, Hall of Fame, summer clinics, and leadership conference.
Former executive director Ray Broadaway put Howell on the board in 2006.
The Toombs County grad has degrees from Brewton-Parker and Georgia College, and started his coaching career near home, with two years at Robert Toombs and then two at Toombs County.
He then coached at East Laurens, Dublin, Wayne County, Washington County, Warner Robins, and GMC Prep. Howell has been at GMC since 2016, and has worked with the GHSA in a variety of roles over the years.
