Henley in good company over par after a round, GSU/GSU pair solid
The suspense of the Los Angeles Country Club Course that few have seen or played on wasn’t as scary for some players in the first round of the U.S. Open.
Co-leaders Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele scorched it with 8-under 62, with only 37 players under par and players like Justin Thomas, Adam Scott, Jason Day, Tom Kim, and Kirt Kitayama struggling at 3 over or worse.
Maconite Russell Henley is in the middle after shooting a 1-over 71.
Henley is among 12 top-50 players tied at 56th, including defending champ Matt Fitzpatrick, Patrick Cantlay, Taylor Moore, Collin Morikawa, and Sungjae Im.
Henley bogeyed the first hole of the day, an unfortunately more typical start than he’d like, and he had two more in the next seven holes. But he had two birdies and seven pars on the back nine.
He belted a 75-foot shot to within six inches of par on No. 5, after an odd second shot, and almost saved par after getting out sand on No. 8.
He hit 11 of 13 fairways, ranking high in the field, but he struggled with strokes gained off the tee, approach, short game, and putting.
Meanwhile, Georgia State and Georgia Southern alums are faring well.
Georgia Southern’s Ben Carr is third among amateurs and tied for 38th among everybody, with an even round. He was 1 over through nine, and then had three birdies to two bogeys on the second nine.
Georgia State’s J.J. Grey is tied for 56th at 1 over, with three birdies and four bogeys in his first major and 21st PGA event. He’s in the hunt to make his sixth cut.
The top 60 and ties make the cut.
Henley tees off at 1o:51 a.m. on Friday, and Carr goes at 11:37 a.m., followed 20 minutes later by Grey.

Macon tops Lexington County
Pitching came up big for Macon in a 5-3 win over Lexington County.
Six pitchers – including FPD grad Austin Emener – combined for 12 strikeouts, four walks, and three hits. Emener went the fifth and sixth innings to get the win, striking out five with no walks.
Macon (5-6) hosts Lexington County Friday night.
