Mercer alum’s goal: From Boston Marathon to five major world marathons

 

Central Georgians selected for Georgia HS Football HOF

          Five Central Georgians with hall of fame careers were announced Friday as part of the new class to be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame.

          Vernon “Catfish” Smith of Lanier, Bill Hartman of GMC Prep, and Billy Henderson of Lanier from the pre-1948 category along with Julius Adams of Ballard-Hudson from the Georgia I A and Hawkinsville’s Charles Johnson from the 2000s.

          Among other notables to be inducted: Pepper Rodgers, Dan Reeves, Lucius Sanford, Eddie Lee Ivery, Pat Swilling, Al Pinkins, Jeff Saturday, Mike Bobo, Quincy Carter, D.J. Shockley, and Ronnie Brown.

          Central Georgians on the ballot that didn’t make it this year: Isaac Jackson, Lanier; Tommy Hart, Ballard-Hudson; and Ben Ziambiasi, Mount de Sales.

          The ballot covers specific time-frame periods, up to the 2000s, and includes the GIA, the home to African-American schools until it joined the GHSA in 1971.

Bacon win tight one on road

          A run in the seventh was the difference in Macon’s 3-2 win at Lexington County.

          Benjamin Schechterman walked, advanced on a grounder, and score on an infield error.         John-Reagan Freethy had two of Macon’s six hits.

          The teams play Saturday in Macon.
