Jackson Thomas had himself a day. His towering homer to left in the bottom of the second inning was all Thomas the pitcher would need for the complete-game shutout. He fanned six with a walk and two hits on 91 pitches, and went 2 for 3 with two RBI at the plate, Blake Bellflower adding a two-hit game. John Milledge added two in the fourth and sealed it with three in the sixth, and it can win another state title with a win in the second game, scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. at Augusta Christian.
Class AA
Southwest Georgia 2, Gatewood 1
The Warriors forced the championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. at GSIC, where the opener was played, by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, with a single, walk, single and then a one-out two-run single to right for the walk-off. The Gators scored one in the first, and not in an easy way. Ben Brannen singled, and Ames Johnson followed with one to left. A rundown ensued, with Brannen eventually reaching third and scoring on a throwing error, Johnson making the second out at third. Another scoring opportunity slipped away in the third after two hit batters and a walk around one out, Gatewood failing to score. Brannen had three of Gatewood’s five hits, and the duo of Lawson Wooten, and Wilson Moore teamed for 10 strikeouts and six walks in a five-hitter.
