The home field wasn’t an advantage in this Class A/Division I semifinal. A pair of three-run innings overcome Bleckley County’s 1-0 first-inning lead for the hosts in the opener. Bleckley County pulled within 7-4 with three runs in the fifth, but couldn’t manage any more, five of the final six batters being retired.

Around/About Central Georgia

Obit-Gosier Sr. was a longtime official, on state sports hall authority

Fort Valley State was a huge part of Wilson Gosier Sr.’s life, beginning with his admission to then Fort Valley State College in 1957 at the age of 16.

Fittingly, the Pettigrew Center will host a service for Gosier, who died last Thursday at the age of 81

A public viewing will be held at Edwards Small Mortuary on MLK Jr. Drive in Fort Valley on Friday from 4:30-6:30 p.m., with a reception at Marsha Gosier’s home from 7-11 p.m. on Friday, at 286 San Gerald Drive in Fort Valley.

Saturday’s service is at 11 a.m. at FVSU’s Pettigrew Center with interment to follow at Willow Lake Memorial Gardens.

A Brooks County Training School graduate, Gosier competed in football, basketball, and baseball at FSC, was the assistant dean of students starting in 1969 and was FVSU’s athletics director, first as interim, from 2009-10.

Along the way, he became one of the NFL’s first African-American officials, for nearly 30 years, and continued to officiate college football and basketball games into the 1990s as part of several college officiating affiliations.

Gosier helped raise funds for the FVSU athletics department, and teamed with former Wildcat greats Rayfield Wright and Stan Lomax to begin an FVSU hall of fame.

He was a teacher of the year in 1969, appointed twice to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority, and named an Outstanding Georgia Citizen in 1996.
