GHSA Playoffs
Class 6A
Houston County 6, Etowah 5; Houston County 4, Etowah 1
Finally, the Bears avoided a third game, thanks to Eli Stephens walk-off hit-by-pitch in a two-run bottom-of-the-seventh rally, and Andrew Dunford’s efficient and sharp six-inning pitching effort in the small-ball nightcap. The Bears (34-6) did sweat in the first game, a 4-1 lead turning a 4-all tie and then a 5-4 lead when Etowah pieced together a run in the top of the sixth. Singles by Ty Waters, Elijah Smith, and Ethan Buffone led to the first run in the seventh, Buffone’s bunt single bringing in the tie run. Vick Gann was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Stephens was plunked with the fifth pitch for the game-winner. The Bears led the clincher 2-1 after four, then pieced together single runs in the sixth and seventh, both runs coming with two outs. Dunford got out of a matching slight jams – two outs, then two on – in the sixth and seventh.
