Birdies scares for Henley, but a solid Heritage
Russell Henley continued his run of solid play and tantalizing putting with another weekend of contention only to reach a ceiling lowered by a birdie slump.
After six in the second round and five in the third round lifted him into the group of contenders, Henley couldn’t get over the hump on Sunday and shot a 1-under on Sunday to for a 10-under 274 and tied-for-19th finish.
Henley, who is not competing in this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans, ended one hole short of a 61-hole bogey-free streak.
His second shot on 18 landed on the edge of the bunker, with a direct line of about 55 feet. He dropped a sweet shot to inside seven feet for par, and then just missed left, tapping in from six inches for a bogey.
On Sunday, he birdied 5 and 13. And as was the case last week in Augusta, he was mighty close to several more birdies, tapping in from two feet or less for par on 3, 6, 7,10,12,14,and 16
He drilled a 28-footer for par on 4.
Henley had five bogeys and a double last week, but none in the second round. At Hilton Head, he had only three bogeys in four rounds.
He’ll remain in the top 25 in the FedEx Cup rankings and in the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
