Around/about Central Georgia

Area players in all-star game

Five Central Georgia high school basketball players have been picked for the GHSA all-star game at Albany State next weekend.

On one side: Putnam County guard Eren Banks and Jones County guard Jaylen Sanford. On the other side: Macon County wing Derrick Lester, Veterans post Aaron Jones, and Westside guard Daveon Henderson.

The game is Saturday night at Albany State.

Henley makes cut, follows with big round

Russell Henley was facing a short weekend fairly clearly when play was suspended Friday in the Players Championship.

The first half of his second round was pretty brutal, with more bogeys than everything else. He fixed things and made the cut, and then exploded up the leaderboard on the third round.

Henley’s 6-under tied for the fourth-best round on Saturday and boosted him 30 spots into a tie for 35th. He’s 4 under with a 212 after the 66, 10 back of leader Scottie Scheffler.

He finished the second round’s second nine even, with a bogey and birdie.

Again starting on No. 10, he started with a bogey and followed with a birdie, then three pars and three birdies, and a bogey. The second nine included a four-birdie stretch in five holes, and no bogeys.

The 66 was Henley’s best round since a pair of 63s and a 65 when he won the World Wide Technology Championship in November, a stretch of 22 rounds.

Henley is not in the field for the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Houston County Sharks win again

The state American Association of Adapted Sports Programs trophy is staying home.

The Houston County Sharks knocked off the DeKalb Silver Streaks 49-30 Saturday at the Macon Coliseum for its 10th state title in 11 years.

Ger’mir Gordon helped the Sharks pull away with eight points in the second half en route to 13. It was clutch after a 15-15 game at halftime.

A big run over the final six minutes clinched it for Houston County, which also go 12points from Adonis Brown.
