The addition of more teams and some tougher competition meant little to Westfield when it came to the GIAA state wrestling tournament.

That just meant more teams looking up at the Hornets when the event was done.

The Hornets outscored St. Anne Pacelli by 11 points for their third straight state title, the tournament finishing up Saturday at Georgia Southwestern in Americus.

GIAA/GISA returnee Mount de Sales was fifth, with FPD 20th and Stratford 21st.

Piedmont improved from sixth last year to fourth in the 26-team field, up from 17 teams last year.

Westfield got state titles from Daniel Sapp at 113, Jackson Spence at 144, Brooks Barbour at 150, Coleman Williams at 157, and Dean Massey at 175.

Sapp won last year at 106 after finishing third two years ago, Massey was fourth at 145, and Barbour third at 152 after taking second at 145 in 2021.

Sapp won by fall, Barbour by a major 12-1, Williams by fall in 97 seconds, Massey by fall.

Sapp (lower weights) and Williams (upper weights) were voted by tournament coaches as wrestlers of the year.

Mount de Sales' Carson Craig took first at 165, and John Milledge's Hayden Hulett won at 190. Craig won by pin in 1:54 over Piedmont's Jamus Wingate, Hulett by pin in 2:49 over Gatewood's Justin Jameson.

Piedmont's Patrick Meadows finished second for the second straight year, in 113 last year and 126 this year. The Cougars got second-place finishes from Boone Pope at 132, Colt Leddon at 138, and Wingate at 165, with nine top-six point-scoring finishes.

Meadows lost 8-6 and Leddon 5-3 in the final,

Jameson of Gatewood and Trinity Christian's Mitchell McDaniel (215) plus Mount de Sales' Carter Sparks took second places.

There were 10 competitors in the first offering of girls wrestling, with three from Mount de Sales.
