Ex-Gator receiver and ESPN voice Doering to visit Macon Touchdown Club
Chris Doering, who went from walk-on to all-conference at Florida and now talks about SEC football, is Monday night’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.
The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner, and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30.
Another current ESPN voice and former Gator is next week’s speaker, Dan Mullen, followed by Army’s Jeff Monken and the SEC/ESPN host Dari Nowkhah.
Doering graduated from P.K. Yonge High in Gainesville, Fla., and was a walk-on at Florida in 1991 under head coach Steve Spurrier, but earned a scholarship a year later and went on to set records during his career.
He caught three touchdowns passes and had two called back in Florida’s legendary “Half a Hundred” win over Georgia in Athens. Doering led Florida in receiving that year with 70 catches for 1,045 yards and 17 touchdowns.
A teammate in that 1995 season was wideout Jacquez Green, a freshman from Peach County.
Doering still holds the program’s record with 31 touchdowns catches, and is sixth on the Gators’ all-time list with 170 catches, and 10th with 2,107 yards.
The member of the Georgia-Florida and Universith of Florida Athletics halls of fame was a sixth-round pick in 1996, and was with Jacksonville Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Denver, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Houston in the NFL, as well as the Carolina Cobras and L.A. Avengers of the Arena Football League.
The owner-operator of Chris Doering Mortgage in Gainesville has been with the ESPN family of networks since 2015, currently focused on the SEC Network’s Saturday coverage.
