GHSA’s Hines announces his retirement; power poll formula approved

The GHSA’s executive committee met on Wednesday to discuss and debate and approve the postseason ranking formula as well as the 2024-26 reclassification and region alignments.

At the end of the meeting came the biggest news: Executive director Robin Hines announced that he will retire as of August 1.

Hines was named to succeed Gary Phillips in May of 2016. Phillips was in the role since 2014, but retired amid regular battles with the state legislature, which was making noise about creating a new organization, but backed off if Phillips – who was with the GHSA for 16 years - resigned.

Only eight months ago, he signed an extension through 2026.

Alexander, Effingham County, Eastside, and Holy Innocents presented appeals to denials of the reclassification committee on moving to a different class.

The committee discussed the convoluted postseason ranking formula that will determine playoff positions in Class A/I through AAA, and the private schools in A through AAA competing in one playoff bracket.

Teams will compete in region play as normal, but split for the playoffs.

Class A/Division II as well as Class 4A, 5A, and 6A will use the traditional bracket model.
