Henley has a strong final round at RSM

He didn’t win and didn’t push the top contenders down the stretch, but Russell Henley had one of the best days Sunday in the final round of the RSM Classic in St. Simons.

His 62 was the second-lowest total of the final round, behind the 61 shot by winner Ludvig Aberg and tied-for-eighth Ben Griffin.

Henley sizzling round lifted him 29 spots to a tie for 13th finish, though he did spent some time in the top 10.

He had a rough first round marred by four bogeys. Henley was on point after that, going bogey-free the final 55 holes.

Henley finished first in driving accuracy (89.3 percent), and greens in regulation (91.7 percent), and ninth in shots gained off the tee (2.8). He was in the top 30 in shots gained approach to green, shots gained tee to green, shots gained total, scrambling (83.3 percent) and longest drive (10th, 338 yards).

He is next scheduled for the Grant Thornton Invitational in Naples, Fl.a Dec. 8-10.

Macon Touchdown Club taps Trojans

Back of the week: Junior standout Antone Johnson of Tattnall ran for 220 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and completed one pass for 28 yards and a touchdown in Tattnall’s 34-20 win over Bethlehem Christian. He added eight tackles and two for loss from his defensive back spot.

Lineman: Junior linebacker/fullback Thomas Union racked up 17 tackles, a sack, and three QB hurries in the Trojans playoff win over undefeated Bethlehem Christian.

There were no Special Teams nominations.

Georgia kicking great Kevin Butler to speak at Macon TD Club

Kicking legend Kevin Butler is Monday’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.

The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Cost is $30 for non-members.

Army head coach Jeff Monken was the scheduled speaker, but had a recently scheduling change and is unable to attend.

Butler is a Savannah native who graduated from Redan in Stone Mountain, and kicked a 44-yard game-winner to win the state title his senior year over Marist.

He went on to earn two All-American honors and four All-SEC selections at Georgia, and holds the team record with 353 points, second in SEC history.

Butler hit a 60-yarder against Clemson in 1984, 17 years before becoming the first kicker inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

He spent 11 seasons with the Chicago Bears and was part of the 1985 Super Bowl champion. Released in 1995, he spent two years with Arizona. Drew, one of three children, was a punter at UGA and spent four seasons in the NFL.

ESPN/SEC host Dari Nowkah is the speaker next week, the final meeting of the season. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart will again speak at the year-end jamboree, tentatively set for March.
