Friday's Central Georgia HS football scouting reports

GHSA

Region 1-6A, 4-AA, 2-AA, 5-A/1, and 4-A/II  are idle

Class 5A
Dutchtown, 2-4/1-1 at No. 11T Jones County, 5-2/3-0
The defending region champs are struggling after a 12-2 season, and 5-1 in Region 2, the loss coming against Jones County. The Bulldogs have a losing record, but are scoring more than they’re giving up, thanks mostly to a 52-16 win over Tift County. The losses are by a total of 23 points, including by one to Class AAA No. 1 Cedar Grove to open the season. They also let a double-digit second-half lead over Warner Robins turn into a 29-22 loss. The Greyhounds have been fairly explosive since a 54-21 loss at Perry, outscoring the next four opponents by 27, 42, 33, and 31, allowing an average of 16.3 points along the way.

Class 4A
Baldwin, 4-2/1-1, at No.3 Perry, 6-1/3-0
The Panthers’ 13-game region win streak is on the line against a team looking to break a three-game losing streak to Perry, which has won the last two by 75-8. The game features two quality running backs. Perry’s Ahmad Gordon, who has 831 yards and 18 touchdowns. Baldwin’s Micah Welch is likely on target for another 1,000-yard season (the Braves haven’t updated MaxPreps stats). Baldwin was off last week after edging Howard 20-19, which followed a 34-0 loss to Spalding.

West Laurens, 2-4/0-2, at No. 5 Spalding, 7-0/3-0
The Raiders will need an epic night to rack up their first win over a ranked team since topping No. 7/AA Toombs County 27-7 in 2020, followed two weeks latr by  a 14-7 win over Spalding. But the Jaguars finished 1-9 that season, and are 22-8 since. The Raiders’ Ty Cummings is nearing 1,000 yards (West Laurens hasn’t updated MaxPreps stats).

Class 3A
No. 14T Peach County, 2-4, at No. 4 Mary Persons, 6-1/1-0
The visiting Trojans (who haven’t updated MaxPreps stats) finally got going with wins of 41 and 18 points after opening the season with losses of 21, 11, 27, and 21. They need a win to stay on target for a non-losing regular season and a shot at the region title, or at least perhaps a home playoff game. The Bulldogs (who haven’t updated MaxPreps stats) have won five straight since losing 28-20 to Spalding with several starters out, including Duke Watson, who’s among the state’s top backs. The margins of the last four wins are 21, 55, 17, and 49. Peach County has won four straight over Mary Persons, winning the last two at Dan Pitts by 22 and 31.

Upson-Lee, 6-1/1-0, at Jackson, 1-6/0-1
Ja’Quan Brantley is 109 yards from 1,000 rushing, and faces a team that watched him crack 300 yards in last year’s meeting, a 42-21 Upson-Lee win, and gave up 208 last week to Mary Persons’ Duke Watson. The Red Devils are giving up 35 points a game and the Knights are getting 33.

Class AA
Dodge County, 1-6/0-3, at Sumter County, 3-3/1-1
The Indians remain one of the most competitive one-win teams in the state, with five losses by a total of 20 points. Sumter County’s three losses are by 92 points. Dodge County won 35-14 last year.

Class A/Division I
Crawford County, 1-6, at GIAA Brookstone 2-4
Brookstone is 1-1 this season vs. GHSA competition, and topped the Eagles 48-21 last year. The Cougars average 275.2 yards on offense. Crawford County has posted no stats this season.

Dooly County, 3-3, at No. 11 Dublin, 4-2
The Bobcats are on a roll with three straight wins after three straight losses, although they were getting better on offense during the start. They’re looking for some momentum before returning to Region 4/A/II play, and face a grumpy Dublin team off a 42-28 home loss to Bleckley County. Xavier Bostic leads a run game still finding its groove with 80.7 yards a game. Dooly County has submitted no stats to MaxPreps.

East Laurens, 2-4, No. 2 Swainsboro, 7-0/1-0
The Falcons are on a three-game losing streak as they head south, although there’s a little momentum from an seven-point road loss at surging Jasper County. But Swainsboro has won five games by at least 32 points, and took last year’s meeting 48-0.

No. 8 Lamar County, 5-2, at Temple, 4-3
The Trojans are back in the polls, thanks to a four-game winning streak that includes two shutouts of Class AAA teams and a win over then-No. 2 Manchester. Lamar County, which won 52-6 last year, faces a solid run team that gets two more yards on the ground each week than the Trojans, and passes a little better. The Trojans’ Jordan Glover has 585 rushing yards and 4 TDs, while QB Ty Head has 6 scores and 239 yards.

Class A/Division II
Hancock Central, 3-3/1-0, at GMC, 1-6/0-2
GMC’s primary task is to slow down Hancock Central duo Dontriel Grable and Raquan Washington, who team for nearly 100 rushing yards a game. GMC’s Jessie Washington has six rushing TDs.

Taylor County, 5-1/3-0, at No.1 Schley County, 6-0/3-0
The Vikings are 0-5 against teams ranked No. 1,  the last time in 2013, a 40-14 loss to Lamar County. Schley County was No. 6 in last year’s 47-13 road win, and the Wildcats are 5-0 this year as a No. 1.

GIAA
Class AAA
Mount de Sales, 0-6/0-1, at Tattnall, 3-4/1-0
The Trojans’ Antone Johnson is at 1,027 rushing yards with 16 touchdowns. Tattnall leads the series 35-10, and has won the last two by a 102-46 margin.

Stratford, 4-3/1-0 at John Milledge, 6-0
The visitors should have some confidence, considering how much of a battle they gave the Trojans in Macon a year ago in a 21-7 loss. Both teams lost key weapons, and John Milledge has some health issues, especially with Kolt McMichael, the starting quarterback. The Trojans have adjusted to a 17-7 scare against Frederica with wins by 68-28 and 49-33. John Milledge trails 19-15, but has won seven straight, with three straight shutouts in that stretch.

Westfield, 3-4, at Heritage, 2-4
The Hornets get almost 100 more yard a game on offense, led by Brayden Gay’s 198.7 yards passing. Westfield won 35-0 last year.

Class AA
Central Fellowship,3-2-1, at Trinity Christian, 2-6
The Lancers get 311.5 yards a game to 169.9 for the Crusaders. CFCA rolled to a 42-7 win last year.

Class A Fullington, 0-5, at Gatewood, 5-1
Gatewood had a week off to get past the 35-0 loss to 4A champ St. Anne-Pacelli. The teams haven’t played since Fullington’s 53-8 win in 2003.

Piedmont, 2-4, at Briarwood, 4-3
Piedmont has been competitive in three of the four losses, but is off a 35-0 loss to Southwest Georgia. Briarwood fell 42-6 to Bulloch.
