Games of the week
Jones County, 4-2/2-0, at No. 10 Ola, 4-1/0-1
Jones County has gotten things going pretty good after some early wobbles, and the Greyhounds are more used to these knock-down region races. Ola didn’t handle success well against Warner Robins, and the Mustangs – who provide no stats on MaxPreps - have had a week to think about that blown opportunity.
TSR pick: Jones County by 4
No. 6 Bleckley County, 4-2, at No 9 Dublin, 4-1
Two teams still finding their ways meet for the 18th time. Dublin has a very surprising loss, and took a while to get going against Charlton County, and Bleckley County isn’t as strong as last year, but has one really good loss (to A/I No. 1 Schley County by six) and a so-so one (by six at 4A West Laurens).
TSR pick: Dublin by 13
Tattnall, 2-4, at Stratford, 4-2
The 57th meeting looks to be as tight as most of the previous 56. Last year, they split, Stratford leaving bruises with a surprisingly convincing 55-28 win in the state semifinals. Seven of the last 10 meetings have been single-digit games, and yup, it’s 5-5. Tattnall hasn’t been as competitive this year as last in perhaps the GIAA’s toughest schedule, and Stratford is one win behind last year at this point.
TSR pick: Tattnall by 4
Games of note
No. 6 Houston County, 5-1/0-1, at Northside, 3-3/1-0
The Eagles cut loose their best player last week, Ricardo Jones, and moved on. The win over Tift County wasn’t great football, but it was a needed win for something of a reeling team. They’re down a starting QB – and without Jones, another “starting” quarterback - and get a miffed Bears team that’s takes no prisoners. They still have to play better football, no matter the margin. And it’s likely to not be a pretty margin for the home team.
TSR pick: Houston County by 33
Westside, 4-1/0-1, at West Laurens, 2-3/0-1
The Seminoles were tied with powerful Perry five minutes into the second quarter, and off came the wheels in a 41-point loss. The Raiders? Hard to figure ‘em out. The feeling here is they can play with anybody in the region except Perry and probably Spalding. Losing that badly to Griffin now means they must beat everybody else to stay in the race for fourth. Westside is a loss away from being in the same position, so this is big for both teams.
TSR pick: Westside by 4 (upset watch)
No. 6 Spalding, 6-0/2-0, at Howard, 3-3/0-2, Ed DeFore
Can Howard go forward after losing by one a game it maybe should have won by maybe two possessions? The Huskies have to play smarter, more disciplined, and tighten up in a couple areas to pull of a huge upset. Huge hy all accounts, but not impossible, by this account.
TSR pick: Spalding by 24
