Putnam County announces new football coach
The return of Putnam County to the world of rankings and playoff runs was enough to pull Joel Harvin from his alma mater.
The Putnam County Board of Education announced Early County head coach Joel Harvin as the War Eagle’s new head coach.
Harvin replaces Shaun Pope, who went 38-19 in five seasons with a region championship. Pope announced his retirement in early December.
Harvin is one of six head coaches at Early County who left with a winning record in at least five seasons, a list that includes the recently deceased Ed Pilcher (42-17, 1986-90).
Harvin was hired at Early County in April of 2017, from his job as offensive coordinator at Northview, Ala. He graduated from Early County – in Southwest Georgia on the Alabama border - in 2001. Harvin was the Bobcats quarterback in 2001 when they lost 33-21 in the Class AA state championship game.
Harvin is 33-32 in six seasons at Early County, which is off a 9-4 season and trip to the GHSA Class A/Division II quarterfinals, losing 36-26 to eventual state champ Bowdon. It was Early County’s best season since 2012.
Harvin took over at Early County for his high school coach, Trey Woolf, who went 105-76 in 16 seasons. Woolf succeeded Harry Wayne Parrish, who coached at Northview before taking over at Early County in 1991 for 10 years.
After playing one season at Valdosta State and then graduating from VSU, Harvin spent six seasons at Northview, the last four as offensive coordinator, helping to develop quarterbacks who went on to play at Troy, Western Carolina, and UAB.
