Another nice trip to Williams-Brice for a Bennett
GMC 34, Lackawanna 12
The host Bulldogs took control early, with a 17-0 lead after a quarter and 27-6 at the half, improving to 4-0 with their fourth win by at least 20 points.
No. 12 GMC finally hits the road with a trip to No. 7 Snow on Oct. 1.
Fort Valley State 29, Allen 27
After losing its opener and having the second game canceled at halftime for lightning, Allen brought questions to Fort Valley State.
Fort Valley State eventually had some answers, overcoming a 21-10 halftime deficit to get the game-winning score inside the final four minutes to improve to 3-0 under first-year head coach Shawn Gibbs.
Five minutes after FVSU took the lead on Kelvin Durham’s 28-yard TD pass to Fralon Warren, Allen answered with a 1-yard score. The Wildcats regained the lead with a Rod Williams field goal at the 10:27 mark of the second quarter.
The Yellow Jackets went on top four minutes later on a 2-yard run, and then connected on a conversion pass for a 21-10 lead with 1:49 left in the first half.
FVSU got one back on a 51-yard scoring pass from Durham to Corintheus Edmonds three minutes into the third quarter, only for Allen to eventually answer with a 23-yard touchdown pass to take a 27-17 lead with 3:36 to go in the third quarter.
But the Wildcats battled back with a 49-yard Durham-to-Warren connection but the PAT kick was blocked, FVSU within 27-23. They reached the Allen 29 on their first trip of the fourth quarter, then lost six yards on a rush and failed on fourth and 16 from the 35.
But the Wildcats did something the next time, driving 66 yards on 12 plays, Durham running in from the 10. The PAT kick, though, was again blocked, and FVSU’s lead was 29-27 with 3:58 left in the game. An unsportsmanlike flag pushed the kickoff back to the 20, and Allen started on its 40.
The drive was sabotaged by a 6-yard loss on a sack by Houston County grad Caleb Thomas and Adeon Farmer. Allen passed incomplete on third and fourth down, and FVSU ran out the final 2:45.
Durham completed 20 of 32 for 334 yards and three scores with no picks, six for 146 yards to Warren and seven for 143 yards to Edmonds. Emanuel Wilson ran 22 times for 63 yards.
Former Westside quarterback Victor Dixon has moved to defense, according to the postgame stats, and was tied for fourth for the Wildcats with five tackles. Peach County grad Ethan Manns had four stops, Thomas adding two tackles for loss assists.
Allen’s David Wright completed 26 of 37 for 295 yards, with two scores and no interceptions. Jayden Horace rushed for 125 yards on nine carries.
Next on the always-fluctuating FVSU schedule is a trip north to face Bluefield (W. Va.) State, followed by homecoming on Oct. 1 against Benedict.
