Around/About Central Georgia
Kennesaw State’s Bohannon opens TD Club season
Kennesaw State head coach Brian Bohannon is the speaker Monday night at the Macon Touchdown Club as the first guest of the season.
The program begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth on Pierce Ave. Cost is $30 for non-members.
Bohannon became KSU’s first head coach in March of 2013 to start the program at Kennesaw State, and he’s had the Owls winning ever since, bringing a 63-20 record to town as he starts his seventh season. KSU was surprised by Samford 27-17 in the season opener and then lost 63-10 at Cincinnati.
The Owls are now back in the ASUN for football, the conference adding the sport last year. Kennesaw State joins Jacksonville State, Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, and North Alabama.
Kennesaw State has been an ASUN member in all sports except football until last year, joining the Big South when it started football. The Owls won three conference titles in six full seasons, and went to the FCS quarterfinals twice. They left the Big South having gone 29-8 in conference games, six of the losses coming in the first two seasons.
They have ended four straight seasons in the FCS top 10.
The Griffin grad played at and graduated from Georgia, and has a Master’s from West Georgia. He has coached at Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern, Navy, West Georgia, and Gardner-Webb.
The Owls have a several Central Georgians on the roster: DB Je’Cory Burks of Perry, RB Qua Ashley of Dublin, OL Trey Butts of Mount de Sales, LS Ronnie Thomas of Houston County, and DL Jayden Barron of Upson-Lee.
The latest players of the week:
Back: Westside freshman QB James Neville completed 12 of 16 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns in the 51-7 win over Rutland.
Co-lineman: Howard junior LB Ethan Ellington had seven solos and five assists, plus two tackles for loss and a safety in the 16-7 win at Harris County.
Co-lineman: Northeast senior DE Carlton Jackson was in on 15 tackles, including four for loss and three sacks, in the 26-8 upset of Class AAA Carver-Columbus.
