Around/about Central Georgia

Mercer gets an early start to the football season

          Maybe it’s a good thing Mercer is getting going a little early than most teams.

          Expectations are higher than they’ve been, thus so is anticipation.

          Mercer is in the preseason top 25 in American Football Coaches Association, Stats, CFB Network, Athlon, and CBS Sports, among others when it welcomes Morehead State on Saturday.

          Kickoff at Five Star Stadium is 7 p.m.

          This is Morehead’s 93rd season, and 10th straight with at least one ranked FCS team. Head coach Rob Tenyer is 41-57 entering his 10th year, and first meeting with Mercer.

          Both teams were in the Pioneer Football League when Mercer reinstated football in 2013, but they didn’t meet. The Eagles finished 7-4 last year, tied for third in the PFL.

          The Eagles have two players from Georgia, neither from Central Georgia. Mercer has several from Central Georgia on the roster: WR Travion Solomon, Northeast; OL Jose Gonzalez, Warner Robins; WR Nate Boehm, Veterans; DL Will Pounds, Mount de Sales; OL Justin Brett, Washington County; DB Nate Brooks, Veterans; OL Elijah Heald, Windsor; CB Tucker Mix, Jones County;

As does GMC

          GMC will look to do what it didn’t last year, and win the season opener when it kicks off 2022 on Saturday.

          Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. at Davenport Field when the Bulldogs welcome Georgia Christian.

          GMC finished 6-5 last year, losing 34-16 at Monroe College in the opener before reeling off three straight wins and six of seven.

          It’s Georgia Military College Appreciation Day. The Bulldogs host Monroe College next week, the second of four straight home games to start the season.
