Henley has huge round at Rocket Mortgage

Whatever Russell Henley did during a long break recently is working.

          In a big way.

The Stratford grad had his best round since January to jump into contention at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

It’s been a long time since Henley had consecutive bogey-free rounds. Friday, he was steady and consistent, with four birdies on the front nine and three on the back nine en route to a 7-under day and two-round 134.

Unofficially, it’s the first time this season that Henley has escaped bogeys in two straight rounds.

The sizzling day lifted him 29 spots into a tie for fourth with Cameron Young and fellow Georgian Stewart Cink, all at 10 under for the tournament, five back of leader Taylor Pendrith.

Henley’s 65 tied for the second-best score of the day, trailing Young’s 63, which was eight shots better than his opening 71.

After a quality start to the season in which he made 12 straight cuts with only one over-par tournament along the way, Henley missed two cuts in six tournament, shooting over par in five.

His best tournament was the Sony Open, back in mid-January, when he finished second with a 23-under 257, opening with a 62 and 63 and finishing with 67 and 65. Even there, he didn’t have consecutive rounds with no bogeys. Two eagles in the second round countered a bogey.

A dozen players are at 9-under or better.

Macon thumped in home finale

A four-run sixth put the game out of reach for Forest City in a 9-1 win over Macon in the Bacon’s final home game of the season.

Macon is 23-24 and Forest City is 22-24, while High Point-Thomasville is also 23-24. The Bacon visit Florence on Saturday while the Owls are at Lexington County. HP-Thomasville is at Wilson.

No playoff scenarios have been posted by the league or teams.
