GMC, FPD grads help North Greenville to NCAA D-II championship game
A pair of Central Georgians are doing their part toward steering North Greenville to an NCAA Division II baseball national championship.
GMC’s Cory Bivins and FPD’s Noah Takac have helped the Crusaders into the championship game on Saturday, North Greenville eliminating West Chester with an 8-5 win Thursday night.
The semifinals of the double-elimination tournament in Cary, N.C. were Thursday, with Point Loma-Rollins in the afternoon followed by North Greenville-West Chester at 6 p.m.
Point Loma suffered its first loss on Thursday, 12-4 to Rollins, and those two will play again Friday at noon. The national championship is Saturday at 7 p.m., with an “if” game time to be determined.
Southern Arkansas, Angelo State, Southern New Hampshire, and Southern Arkansas have been eliminated.
North Greenville led 8-1, but West Chester cut it to 8-4 in the fifth. Bivins went 0 for 2, but had a sacrifice bunt that advanced two runners who scored, and another successful sac bunt later.
The top-seeded Crusaders opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over West Chester (Pa.) on Sunday. Bivins had a hit and RBI.
North Greenville set records with its 18-3 win over Angelo State on Tuesday, setting a tournament record in Cary since 2009.
Bivins had two hits and scored three times, pushing his average up to .329. Takac – who started his college career at Davidson - got the start and went five efficient innings, throwing 76 pitches and striking out two and walking two with only one hit, improving to 7-0 and dropping his ERA to 1.60.
