Henley had one wild day of golf at The Players
By the end of the day, Russell Henley probably need a big ol’ aspirin, and maybe a celebratory glass.
Henley covered a whole lot of golf in one day en route to another top-15 finish. Golfweek.usatoday.com called it a “psycho scorecard.”
First hole of the day? Two shots into the trees and one into the bunker for a double bogey.
Second hole of the day? Buried a 240-yard second shot for the ever-so-rare albatross, three under par, only the sixth albatross in Players’ history. One is from his Georgia teammate Harris English, in 2019.
He became the first player in The Players history with an albatross and eagle in the same round.
Then seven pars and two birdies before, boom, an eagle. He finished with six pars and a bogey to go 4 under for the day and 6 under for the tournament, good for a tie for 13th, seven shots back of winner Cameron Smith.
It was a quality and frustrating tournament for Henley, with 43 pars, 14 birdies, 10 bogeys, an eagle, a triple bogey, double bogey, double eagle, and albatrosss. His third round was the devil’s card of 666: six birdies, six pars, and six bogeys.
And the final round, the golf straight of an albatross, eagle, birde, par, bogey, and double bogey.
All he missed was a hole in one.
Henley is skipping this week’s Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Fla.
