Quick work: Georgia hires Florida’s White to replace Crean

A different route for Georgia

Mercer’s latest Goliath? Dynasty Connecticut

Last year, Mercer’s women took on what’s become the program of the last half-decade, South Carolina, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Now, the program of last 30 years and the most successful head coach are on deck.

Mercer will take on Connecticut on Saturday in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament, the Bears a 15th seed and the Huskies a 2.

Connecticut won its first national championship in 1995, with Gene Aureimma in his 10th season. The Huskies went 35-0 that year, going 39-0 in 2001-02, 2008-09 and 2009-10 as part of a huge winning streak.

The Huskies have 11 national titles, all under Auriemma, but none since 2015-16. Of course, they’ve reached the Final Four every year in that span.

The last time UConn lost a first-round game? 1992-93, which is also the last time they’ve failed to reach at least the Sweet 16, losing 72-63 to LaSalle.

It’s the first meeting between the programs.

No. 15 Mercer women: vs. No. 2 Connecticut, Saturday, at Storrs, Conn.
No. 6 Georgia women: vs. Dayton or DePaul, Friday, at Ames, Iowa
No. 16 Georgia State men: vs. Gonzaga, Thursday, at Portland, Ore.
No. 9 Georgia Tech women: vs. Kansas, at Palo Alto, Cal.
