Is FVSU’s next head coach coming from FCS?
A website covering North Carolina A&T athletics reported Wednesday that longtime assistant Shawn Gibbs is Fort Valley State’s next head football coach.
Bluedeathvalley.com said Gibbs has agreed to be the next Wildcats football boss.
FVSU has announced a 2 p.m. press conference on Thursday at the Christine and Willie C. Jones Amphitheater to introduce the next coach.
Maurice Flowers resigned after one full and a partial season last month to take over at Johnson C. Smith, his alma mater. Flowers was Fort Valley State’s sixth head coach since 2000, following Kent Schoolfield (1997-2002), John Morgan (2003-2005), Deondre Clark , (2006-08), Donald Pittman (2009-16), Kevin Porter (2017-2019).
Schoolfield, Morgan, Pittman, and Porter were all fired, and Clark asked to be reassigned.
Gibbs was a standout running back at North Carolina Central in the early mid-1990s, and is among the program’s top rushers with 1,627 rushing yards.2000s, and then joined the staff.
Gibbs, who has coached N.C. Central and N.C. A&T as well as Grambling, is reportedly bringing inside linebackers coach Denzel Jones, an A&T alum, to FVSU.
