GIAA playoffs set

Most of the scores of teams making the GIAA playoffs will have a week off as “play-in” games take place this week, with everybody else starting on Nov. 18.

The GIAA is splitting what is Class AAA in the regular season into two classes for the playoffs, so, in fact, two teams from one region can win state titles but only one can win a region championship.

There were 25 teams competing in five Class AAA districts, and 20 – 80 percent – are in the playoffs. Of the 12 teams in AA, 10 – 83 percent – are in the playoffs, and six of the seven Class A teams will play on.

St. Anne Pacelli and Stratford are 1-2 in 4A, and have byes.

First-round Class AAAA matchups: No. 5 FPD at No. 4 Brookstone; No. 6 Westfield at No. 3 Tattnall. One of two “play-in games has No. 9 Mount de Sales at No. 8 Bethlehem Christian.

Three of the AAAA teams are 2-8.

Defending champ and winner of 47 straight games John Milledge is the top seed in AAA and the only Central Georgia team in the field.

Nine of the 10 teams in the AAA field have winning records.

Central Fellowship and Brentwood are 1-2 in AA.

No. 5 Gatewood is at No. 4 Augusta Prep, with No. 9 Trinity Christian at No. 8 Piedmont in a “play-in” game.

As of late Sunday night, the link for the Class A pairings was dead.

Macon TD Club picks players from Stratford, FPD, and Westside

Players from opposite sides in the same game and one player qualifying for two awards are among the latest Macon Touchdown Club players of the week.

Co-back: Senior running back Keondre Glover of Stratford had a career night in the 49-40 win over FPD, with 17 carries for 355 yards and six touchdowns, an average of 20.9 yards a carry.

Co-back: FPD junior Jakhari Williams quarterback had a career night as well, rushing 26 times for 217 yards and three touchdowns, while completing 19 of 35 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns, thus accounting for486 yards and five touchdowns.

Lineman: Westside senior lineman DonJuan McGee Jr. had 12 tackles, three for loss, in the 34-33 overtime win over Howard.

Special teams: McGee blocked the game-tying point-after kick in overtime to preserve the Seminoles 34-33 win and put them into the GHSA Class 4A playoffs.

Former Georgia Tech standout Jones to speak at Macon Touchdown Club

Broadcaster and ex-Georgia Tech running back Roddy Jones is Monday’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.

The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30.

Wes Durham (ACC Network, Fox).is next week’s speaker, followed by GHSA executive director Robin Hines, and then ESPN/SEC host Dari Nowkah to end the season.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart will speak at the yearly jamboree in March.

Jones was a four-year starter in the backfield back for Tech from 2008-11, as team captain his senior year. The slotback helped the offense to records en route to the ACC championship and win over Clemson. He set mark with 52 starts and highest yards-per-carry at 7.6.

The three-time academic honoree ran for 212 yards in an upset of Georgia in 2008. He graduated in 2010, and began his broadcasting career with Raycom in 2015.
