Macon Touchdown Club picks Greyhounds and a Trojan
Two players from Jones County and one from Tattnall are the latest Macon Touchdown Club players of the week.
Co-Back: Jones County junior wideout Geo Wade had four catches for 111 yards and a touchdown in the Greyhoundsā 24-7 victory over Dutchtown.
Co-Back: Sophomore cornerback and running back Antone Johnson of Tattnall ran six times for 102 yards and a touchdown, adding a 10-yard catch in the Trojansā 41-13 win over Mount de Sales.
Lineman: Junior noseguard Jamarion Parker of Jones County had eight tackles, two for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and four quarterback hurries in the win over Dutchtown.
GMCās Manchester to speak at Macon Touchdown Club
Georgia Military College junior college head coach Rob Manchester is this weekās speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.
The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30.
Georgia Southern head coach Clay Helton is next weekās speaker.
The Kentucky native played college football for the home-state Wildcats from 1992-95, earning four letters under then-head coach Bill Curry. He was the teamās most valuable walk-on in 1994, and earned a scholarship for his senior season. The three-time SEC academic honor roll pick graduated with a degree in secondary education.
His coaching career started as a grad assistant at Tulane under Tommy Bowden, and he was on the 11-0 staff in 1998. He took the same position at Kentucky in 1999, working with defensive linemen, linebackers, and cornerbacks on consecutive years. After a year at Louisiana Tech in 2002, he moved to Milledgeville.
Under legendary head coach Bert Williams, Manchester started out coaching the Bulldogsā secondary and helping the defense to national No. 3 rankings 2003-6. He was GMCās defensive coordinator for 14 years.
In October of 2020, Williams announced his retirement effective at the end of the season to focus on battling mantle cell lymphoma, which he was diagnosed with in December of 2019. He died in August of 2021.
Manchester was named immediately as Williamsā coaching successor, and in March of 2021, the married father of two added athletics director to his duties.
