Henley slump continues in PGA’s final round

If there was a game film of the weekend, Russell Henley might file it in the trash can.

He finished tied for 71st out of 81 golfers at the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, S.C.

Henley dropped on Saturday out of the top 50 with a 74, battling five bogeys with three birdies.           Sunday was hair worse, with the same bogey total and one less birdie for a 75.

How rough was the weekend? In 72 holes, Henley had 18 bogeys in three rounds, avoiding them on Friday. Still, that’s 25 percent bogeys for the weekend. His 297 was his worst of the season, by four over last week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

He is taking the week off, skipping the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.

Wachtel shines in champions meet

His high school career over, Justin Wachtel hasn’t lost a step.

That was evident Saturday in the Wingfoot Night of Champions meet at Marietta High, where many of the GHSA state champions gathered for competition.

Wachtel set the state’s fifth all-time mark with a 4:08.2 in the 1,600. What dazzled onlookers was a closing lap of 56.8 by Wachtel, who started the final lap in second, more than 30 meters back.
