Brentwood, Gatewood, John Milledge win GISA state track titles

Editor’s note: apologies to Gatewood’s boys for initially failing to list them in the headline and social media postings on Sunday.

          The sun shined a little brighter the past few days for Brentwood, Gatewood, and John Milledge, which picked up GISA state track titles at the three-day meet at Strong Rock Christian in Locus Grove.

          John Milledge had little competition in AAA boys with 144.5 points, way ahead of Pinewood’s 84 points. Trinity Christian was a solid fourth.

          Brentwood’s girls rolled in AA, winning by 32 points over Robert Toombs, which topped Gatewood by 6.5 points.

          Gatewood just got past Augusta Prep in AA boys, winning by three points, with Briarwood 10 points back. The Gators came up big in the day’s final event, needing one 4x400 relay team to win and the other to finish at least sixth.

The No. 1 team won - and set a record in the process - and the No. 2 team took fifth, giving Gatewood its second boys state track title.

          Trinity Christian’s girls were in the hunt in AAA, finishing third with 77 points, 1.5 ahead of John Milledge and 15 behind champ Pinewood.

          Trinity Christian’s Kardyn George was the AAA girls’ points winner with 28 points, nipping Jadie Burrell of Southland with 27.25

         Brentwood’s Anne Marie Sheppard was second in AA girls total points with 26.75 points, trailing Augusta Prep’s Aine trapp’s 31.50, and just ahead of Gatewood’s Raegan Wilkins.

          Gatewood’s Bryce Johnson was fourth in AA boys with 27 points, not far behind co-winners Hayes Trapp and Steven Joseph with 29.5.

          John Milledge had five athletes in the AAA boys’ top 15, led by tied-for-sixth Tommy Collier with 16 points.
