Around/About Central Georgia

Tennis, soccer playoffs get going

          The state postseason has already started for a few Central Georgia tennis teams, with the rest get going this week, and being joined by soccer teams as the GHSA state playoffs start.

          The postseason for baseball and lacrosse starts on April 28.

          The highest ranked soccer team from Central Georgia in Eurosport is the ACE boys team, No. 1 in Class A Public, a spot ahead of region rival GMC, with Dooly County fifth. Putnam County’s boys are No. 2 in Class AA, and FPD’s girls are No. 3 in Class A private.

          FPD, Mary Persons, and GMC are the lone area teams ranked in both boys and girls.

          Among first-round matchup of notes has Warner Robins girls at Jones County in 5A and Washington County’s girls at No. 6 East Laurens.

          There are four first-round games in Houston County, at Houston County, Veterans, and Perry girls and at Veterans boys.

Strong Sunday lifts Henley

          A late-round double bogey on Saturday didn’t affect Russell Henley on Sunday, and he finished tied for ninth at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head.

          Henley had five birdies and one bogey for a 4-under 67 in the final round, finishing with an 11 under 273.

          Stewart Cink struggled to a 70 in the final round, but he still cruised to a four-shot win over Harold Varner III and Emiliano Grillo.

          The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is next, but Henley isn’t participating.
