Around/About Central Georgia

Samford pops Mercer, ends title hopes

The Bulldogs and head coach Chris Hatcher of Macon got some quality play from Central Georgians. Linebacker Josiah Cotton (Mount de Sales) was second with 10 tackles, and a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Kicker Mitchell Fineran (Peach County) was 3 of 4 on field goals – one was blocked – and perfect on five PATs. Offensive lineman Luke Byrne (Mary Persons) played as well.

Henley catches fire … and then came 17

It was such a nice day for so long at the RBC Heritage for Russell Henley on Saturday.

He birdied four of the first six holes, and was 4-under after nine. Pars and birdies followed, and Henley jumped from a tie for 40th to a tie for fourth, albeit before the leaders teed off.

Then came No. 17, a par 3 of 178 yards. A double-bogey sent Henley back a little bit and he enters the final round tied for 21st with a 7-under 206.

His tee shot on 17 went past the green and down a steep hill. His second shot was way too soft, and rolled back down the hill. His third shot, from about the same spot as the second, made the green and slid past the hole. From almost 12 feet, Henley lipped the cup for a bogey and then tapped in.

Stewart Cink dropped six strokes from his first two rounds but still holds a five-shot lead over Collin Morikawa, 195-200.
