GISA wrestling: Sapp leads Westfield to state championship (Central Georgia results)

Nic Sapp has been wrestling at Westfield for a long time, and won individual state championships as a sophomore and junior.

So he was clearly a favorite as a senior entering the 2021 championship that started Friday at in Americus.

This time, he’s an individual state champ who is part of a state championship team.

Westfield capped the progress of recent years with a GISA state wrestling championship on Saturday.

Westfield finished third last year, 13 points behind Southland and way behind Bulloch (239.5). The Hornets were fourth in 2019, again behind first-place Bulloch.

Sapp was joined atop the podium by teammates Cole Williams, and Coe Leavengood, and Porter Faulk.

Sapp and Williams “defended” titles. Sapp won at 113 last year, and Williams at 145, this year at 160 for Leavengood and again at 113 for Sapp.

Leavengood finished second at 152 last year.

Gatewood’s Jackson Hewatt and Piedmont’s Davin Waldrop along with Jayson Wright of John Milledge captured individual state titles. Wright was the 195-pound champ last year, and defended the title in the same weight class.

The Hornets got a second place from Brooks Barbour, thirds from JD Cauley, Dean Massey, and Daniel Sapp, fourths from Brady Greer, Bryant Greer, Cole Miller, and Tanner Roberson, and sixths from Owen Knight at Carson Martin.
