Friday’s Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
In Coverage: Central Georgia’s only Scoreboard
Four Central Georgia teams in state wrestling
Perry, West Laurens, Lamar County, and East Laurens are in action Saturday in the GHSA team dual wrestling championships.
Lamar County is host to AA, and welcomes East Laurens. Perry and West Laurens in 4A are at Jefferson.
Because of the pandemic, each classification is hosted by a high school, rather than being held at the Macon Coliseum.
Second-seeded Perry opens with Thomas County Central while West Laurens faces North Oconee. The Raiders’ Evan Guyton at 195 and Chase Horne at 285 entered the season among the top in the state in their class to pace West Laurens.
Last year, Perry beat Columbus and lost to eventual runner-up Gilmer, and West Laurens lost to champion Woodward in the opening round. Baldwin lost its opener a year ago.
Lamar County is No. 6 in AA and battles Vidalia, while seventh-seeded East Laurens gets Dade County. Lamar County’s Levi Banks at 152 is a state favorite, leading the Trojans.
Lamar County beat Harlem and then lost to Elbert County in the second round. Dodge County lost to Callaway in the first round.
Veterans finished second in 5A last year, but lost to Ola in this year’s prelims.
The championships are double elimination. Competition began at 9 a.m. and resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. with quarterfinals. Consolation finals and finals start at 3 p.m. Saturday
