Titus closes in on 1,000 in Mercer women win over Furman

Shannon Titus got closer to the 1,000-point mark for her career en route to 11 points for the night to help Mercer get past Furman 69-66 in overtime at Hawkins Arena.

Jaron Dougherty led Mercer with 25 points on 9-of-11 free-throw shooting, while Amoria Neal-Tysor added 19. Titus, now with 992 points, had a double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds.

Mercer led 33-28 at halftime, but the Paladins won the second half 30-25, forcing overtime with a layup with eight seconds left. Mercer went up 58-56 with 2:43 left on two Dougherty free throws, but missed five shots the rest of the way to open the door for the Paladins to tie.

Dougherty made one of two with 2:16 left in overtime to put the Bears up for good, Neal-Tysor adding a jumper 40 seconds later for a five-point lead. The Paladins cut it to three with a buzzer-beater.

Mercer improved to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference, Furman falling to 5-8 and 1-3. The Bears go for their fourth straight win on Saturday against Furman again.
