COVID claims longtime Mary Persons coach Carey
After being hospitalized for less than a month, longtime Mary Persons coach and teacher David Carey died Monday from COVID-related complications.
Monroe County Schools issued a statement early Monday afternoon:
“The Monroe County Schools and Mary Persons High School families are today mourning the passing of longtime teacher and coach David Lee Carey. Coach Carey died of complications from Covid-19. He had been hospitalized since late December.
“In notifying faculty and staff, Mary Persons Principal Dr. Jim Finch asked that all keep Coach Carey's family, as well as the MPHS family, in their thoughts and prayers. Funeral arrangements will be shared at a later date.
“Coach Carey had been teaching more than 30 years, the last 25 spent at Mary Persons where he taught in the social studies department and coached football, basketball and track.
“Superintendent Dr. Mike Hickman said extra counselors will be available at the high school on Tuesday to support students and staff.”
Carey coached and taught in Bibb County before moving to Mary Persons.
He was the head girls basketball coach for nearly a decade, coached track, and had been on the football staff for more than two decades.
