Atlantic Sun’s all-decade men’s basketball team is stout, and familiar
Before Mercer beat Duke, the Bears were involved in some quality and memorable battles in the Atlantic Sun, with some quality players and against some.
Mercer put Scott Emerson and James Florence on the conference’s all-decade team for 2001-10, with Dublin grad Ben Smith making the top 22.
Emerson played from 1999-2004, earning two first-team all-conference honors and leading Mercer to the 2002-03 regular-season championship team.
He is still in the conference top 25 all-time in double-doubles (second), rebounds (ninth), field goals made (17th), and points (22nd).
Florence (2006-10), who is still playing in Europe, is among nine 2,000-point scorers in the conference, and is in the top 25 in free throws (fourth), steals (eighth), field goals (10th), 3-pointers (21st), and assists (24th). The freshman of the year is one of four players to make four all-conference teams.
Smith, who has returned to his high school alma mater as head coach, made all-conference three times at Jacksonville during his career (2007-10), leading the Dolphins to two regular-season titles. He is second in free throws, fifth in steals, 12th in points, 14th in assist, and 25th in free-throw percentage.
Florence and Smith engaged in some big-time battles during their careers.
Mercer’s Langston Hall was named in July to the all-decade team for 2011-20, his final year in the conference coinciding with Mercer’s last year, in 2014-15.
