Macon tops visiting Lexington County
Some quality small ball led Macon to a 6-3 win Friday over Lexington County in Coastal Plain League action.
Five pitchers teamed for an efficient two-hitter, Austin Hohm getting the win and Jack Sinclair the save.
Freddy Achecar drove in four runs on two hits, the lone multi-hit batter for Macon. Tyler Williams and Cole Gambill scored twice each atop the lineup.
Savannah beat Macon 4-3 on Thursday, the Bananas countering Macon’s two lead-taking runs in the top of the eighth with two in the bottom half.
Macon gave up two unearned runs on four errors, wasting a 15-strikeout performance by five pitchers. Austin Deming had two hits and two RBI for Macon.
Macon is at Savannah on Saturday, and has an intersquad game on Sunday.
Central Georgia connections in contention at Georgia State Amateur
Georgia College’s Austin Mancilla is in a logjam for third after the first round of the Georgia State Amateur at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Mancilla, an outgoing senior who finished tied for 23rd last year, is one of five at 69, one back of co-leaders co-leaders Steve Kibare and Deven Patel.
Houston County grad Brent Hamm is tied for 12th place with a 71, while FPD grad Wilson Andresss is among those tied for 25th with a 73.
Georgia College’s Daniel Davis is tied for 34th at 74, along with Macon’s Coleman Tidwell.
Former Georgia College golfer Taylor Smith’s 78 has him tied for 65th while Justin Connelly had an 84.
Mercer’s Daniel McKenzie is tied for 89th after shooting 80.
Defending champ Jonathan Keppler has turned pro.
Henley off to good start
Macon’s Russell Henley has been consistent through two rounds of the Workday Charity in Dublin, Ohio.
He has a pair of 70s under his belt, good for a tie for 21st.
Henley was 2 under on Friday, thanks to a pair of birdies and no bogeys. In the first round, he had three birdies and a bogey.
Colin Morikawa has a 131 through two rounds, and a three-stroke lead over Kevin Steelman and Justin Thomas.
The tournament of 156 players and a $6.2 million purse fills the week left open when the John Deere Classic was cancelled.
