GHSA approves shot clock (and deals with plenty of other stuff)
As expected, the GHSA approved a 30-second shot clock to be implemented over three years:
“Year 1 (2020 - 2021): Shot clock used only in approved Holiday Tournaments and Showcase games. Not allowed in region games or post season games.
“Year 2 (2021 - 2022): Shot clock used in approved tournaments and showcase games. Also used in region play as a region decision.
“Year 3 (2022 - 2023): Shot clock used in all varsity games, including the playoffs.”
The move passed 53-10. Georgia men’s head coach Tom Crean and Georgia State’s Rob Lanier attended the meeting to provide support for the move.
There was more than just the basketball vote.
Peach County Schools’ Director of Administrative Services Michelle Masters is one of two female at-large members who will join the state executive committee officially at Wednesday’s meeting.
The GHSA added a second dead week, at Memorial Day, to go with the July 4 dead week.
Also: baseball teams are not required to play doubleheaders during the 30-game regular season.
In cross country: the sport moved from area to region meets. In track, schools may enter three athletes in each individual event at area/region meets; individual athletes can compete in four events and be listed as a participant in relays; schools may have only one relay team per relay event; the 4x800 event as been added with the 4x200 to be eliminated by the spring of 2022.
The promotion of Tanya Anderson to associate director was announced, as was the full retirement of Tommy Whittle.
Buzzell move into contention at GSGA girls championship (roundup)
Veterans grad Mailey Buzzell moved into a tie for second in the GSGA girls championship at Savannah Quarters Country Club.
She matched her first-round 74, which had her seven strokes behind leader Maggie Jackson. Jackson stumbled mightily with a second-round 80, but still retained a one-stroke lead over Buzzell and five others at 148.
Eujin Pyon dropped from fourth to 18th with an 80, but she’s still only six strokes back.
Avery Robinson is tied for 44th and Lucy Wiegert tied for 49th.
In the boys junior championship at Savannah Country Club, Luke Dasher moved up 10 spots to a tie for eighth. He improved by a stroke, but is still nine strokes back of leader Parker Highsmith of Valdosta.
Ryan Smith of Eatonton jumped from a tie for 50th to a tie for 28th with a three-stroke boost, and Max Dupree went from a tie for 72nd to one for 42nd.
The cut was 156, and the tournament ended for Trey Mixon (158), Ty Darsey (163), Lawson Andress (165), and Rhett Smith (171).
