Thursday's Daily News 'n Notes: MLB draft; Honor Roll (Mercer); Signings (Veterans, Windsor); NASCAR; PGA; and more

Thursday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media. Updates will be noted, so check back.

Five from the state go in the MLB draft

The Major League Baseball draft was five rounds, and five players from Georgia were taken, three on the second day.

Georgia pitcher Emerson Hancock went sixth to Seattle and Decatur’s Jordan Walker 21st to St. Louis on Wednesday.

Georgia pitcher Cole Wilcox went in the third round to San Diego on Thursday, with Georgia Tech outfielders Michael Guldberg and Baron Radcliff going next, Guldburg in the third round to Oakland and Radcliff in the fifth round to Philadelphia.

MLB.com’s draft tracker lists all players with a shot – even a fairly long shot – to be drafted. Among those the site listed: Mary Persons outfielder Trippe Moore, Houston County pitcher Jaden Woods, and Mercer’s R.J. Yeager and Kyle Dockus.

The Braves took four college players, including Clemson righty Spencer Strider.

Honor Roll

Mercer outfielder Allie Jones is on the College Sports Information Directors of America’s academic All-America third team.

The junior from Calhoun has a 4.00 while majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology. She is one of seven juniors, the only Southern Conference pick and selection from Georgia.

Jones was hitting .357 with six doubles and leading the nation with 18 steals and no caught-stealing before the premature end to the season.

Signings

Veterans is sending some runners a little bit north, with Gabbi Heaton, Brandon Bill, and Dylan Tran heading to Central Georgia Tech for cross country, where they’ll join signee Logan Ward of Jones County.

Former Windsor standout Holly Phillips is changing teams, transferring from Georgia State to Georgia College.
